Sandra Maria Palleja, MD, currently Vice President, Head of Antiviral Program at Shionogi USA, Inc., is involved with the drug development of compounds for HIV and AIDS. Prior to joining Shionogi USA, Dr. Palleja dedicated her medical career to fighting HIV/AIDS and has held various positions in this arena, such as:

  • Director, Phase IIIB/IV program at Triangle Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in Durham, North Carolina
  • Medical Director for HIV at Roche Laboratories;
  • Director of the Infectious Disease Clinic at St. Vincent’s Hospital, New York City; and Associate Professor of Medicine, New York Medical College and
  • Medical Director of the Screening clinic, Primary Care Liaison to the AIDS team and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Bronx Municipal Hospital Center.

Dr. Palleja is a founding member of the Latino Commission on AIDS and former Chairperson and current member of the Board of CASA Promesa. Dr. Palleja is an advocate for many community issues, including women and HIV, substance abuse and HIV, and gay/lesbian HIV issues among communities of color. She has also served on the New York City HIV Planning Council, the AIDS Drug Assistance program (ADAP) Steering Committee in New York State, and the national review panel for the Title IIIB Ryan White CARE program.

Dr. Palleja received her MD degree from the Boston University School of Medicine and completed her residency training in the Internal Medicine track of Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY.
